Overview
In this article we will be learning how to setup and configure Path Instructions using the CodeRabbit YAML in order to reduce verbosity and nitpicks when performing a code review.
Context
During code reviews, developers rely on CodeRabbit to provide automated feedback on code quality, style, and best practices. However, there are situations where CodeRabbit’s level of detail or frequency of comments — particularly around stylistic preferences or low-impact suggestions — can become overwhelming. Excessive verbosity or nitpicky feedback may distract reviewers from addressing critical design, logic, or performance issues.
Developers often prefer to streamline the review experience to focus on meaningful insights that genuinely improve code quality, rather than minor stylistic inconsistencies that can be handled automatically by tools like linters or formatters. Reducing verbosity also improves cognitive load, enabling faster reviews and more productive discussions. In collaborative teams, minimizing nitpicks fosters a healthier, more constructive review culture — one that values signal over noise and prioritizes clarity, intent, and maintainability over strict adherence to minor conventions.

YAML Configuration
This YAML Configuration below is based on CodeRabbit's Out of the Box Configuration but has the added Path Instructions to help reduce verbosity and nitpicks on the repository during a Code Review.
There are a couple of ways you can implement this configuration into your setup.
Option 1 – Create a new .coderabbit.yaml
Create a .coderabbit.yaml file in the root of your repository and copy/paste the content in the snippet below.
Option 2 – Modify an existing .coderabbit.yaml
Modify your existing .coderabbit.yaml to include the content within path_instructions in the snippet below

- Ignore minor optimization opportunities — focus solely on correctness and safety.
- Provide a top-level summary of critical blockers rather than detailed per-line notes.
- Comment only when the issue must be resolved before merge — otherwise remain silent.
- When in doubt, err on the side of fewer comments — brevity and
blocking issues only.
- Avoid posting any refactoring issues
