On Demand reviews: your free period and what happens next
Last updated: August 21, 2026
What changed?
We've enabled On demand reviews for your organization, and they're free until September 21, 2026 at 5:00 PM PT. Your plan, seats, included reviews, and file limits are unchanged. On demand only applies beyond your plan's included allowance.
What are On demand reviews?
When developers reach their included review limit, they no longer have to wait for it to reset or merge without feedback. They can start an On demand review immediately from a pull request, the CLI, or VS Code, and merge with confidence.
Every On demand review requires explicit approval. Before a review starts, the developer sees the number of billable files and the maximum cost, and must confirm. Nothing runs or bills silently. During the free period, all approved reviews are free.
Pull requests that exceed your plan's included file limit (up to 300 files) show a Review on demand button on GitHub, so large changes that previously couldn't be auto-reviewed can now get a full review with one click.
What happens after September 21, 2026?
On demand reviews stay enabled, and approved reviews become billable at usage pricing:
$1.00 per credit
$0.25 per reviewed file (4 files per credit)
Credits are used only for reviews beyond your plan's included allowance. Reviews within your plan never use credits.
How do I turn it off?
If you'd prefer not to use usage-based pricing after the free period:
Go to Subscription and Billing in your organization settings.
Open the Usage-based add-on tab.
Switch off the pay-as-you-go toggle.
Turn it off anytime during the free period and you will never be charged. Reviews within your plan continue exactly as before, and you can re-enable it whenever you like. Only organization owners, admins, or users with subscription management permission can change this setting.
How do I control spending if I keep it?
No action is needed to keep On demand reviews. In the same Usage-based add-on tab, you can:
Choose how over-limit reviews behave: stop entirely, run on demand with per-review approval, or continue automatically
Set a monthly spending cap
Make a one-time credit purchase, set up a monthly subscription, or enable auto-refill with a monthly cap (minimum $20). If the next refill would exceed your cap, it's skipped rather than partially charged.
Monitor usage, remaining budget, and your full transaction history
Frequently asked questions
Will I be charged during the free period?
No. All On demand reviews are free until September 21, 2026 at 5:00 PM PT.
Can I be charged without anyone taking an action?
No. Every On demand review requires a developer to explicitly approve it after seeing the billable file count and maximum cost. Automatic continuation of over-limit reviews only applies if an admin selects that mode in billing settings.
Does this change my plan or its included reviews?
No. Your plan, seat pricing, included reviews, and file limits are unchanged. On demand pricing only ever applies beyond those limits.
Who can turn the setting off?
Organization owners, admins, or users with subscription management permission. Regular members should contact their org admin.
What about pull requests with more than 300 files?
PRs over 300 files can't be reviewed through On demand. We recommend splitting them into smaller PRs.
I use GitLab or Bitbucket. Do I get the Review on demand button?
The button for large PRs is currently available on GitHub only. Reviews from the CLI work across providers.
Is there one balance for my whole organization?
Yes. One setting, one shared credit balance, and one billing path cover all On demand reviews across your organization.
I turned it off. Can I get written confirmation I won't be billed?
Yes. Contact us or through in-app Support and we'll confirm in writing.
Where can I read more?
Full technical details are in our usage-based add-on documentation.
